The P4M890 chipset is designed to be used with Intel's Pentium 4 and Celeron processors and offers support for the 1,066MHz front-side bus used with the latest versions of the chips, the company said in a statement.
The front-side bus inside a PC is used to connect the processor with main memory. A faster front-side bus allows more data to be moved more quickly between main memory and the processor, improving overall system performance. Previous versions of the Pentium 4 and Celeron processors support a front-side bus that runs at speeds up to 800MHz.
In addition to a faster front-side bus, the P4M890 also supports faster 533MHz DDR2 (double data rate 2) DRAM (dynamic RAM), Via said. The chipset also offers dual PCI Express interfaces.
For users who don't want the additional expense of an add-in graphics card, the P4M890 includes Via's UniChrome Pro graphics core, which offers support for high-definition television at a resolution of up to 1,080 progressive line scan.
The P4M890 is currently available. Pricing was not disclosed.
